The FDRC is proud to support House Resolution 1269, an amendment to the United States Toxic Substances safety act. Introduced by Congressman John Conyers of Michigan, HR 1269 proposes that mold and fungi be reclassified as toxic substances and be subject to regulation and federal support programs in the protection of the Public Health. The bill also proposes Emergency Aid and direct support programs for those whose lives have beeen affected by Toxic Mold. As the ranking Democrat in Congress and a founding advocate in the Civil Rights movement of the 1960's, Congessman Conyers brings his considerable influence to bear on what has been called "The greatest public health threat of the 21st century." We respect and support the broad scope of this bill, as the gravity of the issue demands nothing less than the full powers of our national Public Health administrations. However, we recognize that there is partisan opposition to this much needed legislation. Commercial lobbying interests bent on dodging legal liability are attempting to influence some legislators. The FDRC believes that delays in enacting HR 1269 compound extreme risks to the Public Health. In the meantime, FDRC has been organized to provide a non-profit sector response to this spiraling crisis. Human illnesses caused by fungal overexposures have devastated the lives up to several hundred thousand people in the United States. These affected men, women, and children are in need of immediate and direct emergency support. HR 1269 is a crucial step in right direction to provide this help.
